A giant tree becomes a climbing tower

Ascension of the Fir Cathedral at the Garden Show in the Bavarian Forest takes climbers skywards through the middle of the tree. The trunk of one of the largest firs in the Bavarian Forest was hollowed out for this structure and cut into beams. The beams, forming an airy structure with vertical slits, now stand at the entrance to the "Enchanting Gardens" of the Waldkirchen Garden Show.

Inner values for climbing artists

The rope net structure inside this construction, which was developed and realised by Corocord, makes the Fir Cathedral a dream object with amazing inner values for all climbing artists. A total of nine rope ovals, each measuring 1,80 x 1,10 metres, and a rope ladder forms the new heart of the tree. The irregular rope structure makes for exciting routes and ever-changing views looking up or down.

New life for the fir

The Fir Cathedral was created according to plans of the Dresden-based Rehwaldt landscape architects. This new utilisation has given the mighty tree a second life. The tree, one of the largest of its kind in the Bavarian Forest, had been struck by lightning. Its owner, Josef Freund from Traxing, donated the tree in 2007 to form the basis of the climbing structure.

Safety and sweeping views

The climb follows a circular route around the beams up to a platform 8,75 metres high above the ground. The platform has sweeping views across the Garden Show. A safety net and a rubber safety mat (EPDM) make the climb a safe one.
