"Baku Spaces no. 5" – Corocord goes art
Our knowledge of rope is not only useful for our unique play equipment: in the early summer of 2009 we turned Berlin painter and conceptual artist Marc Schmitz’s concept "Baku Spaces no. 5" into reality. The art installation was on display in June at the Azerbaijan State Academy of Painting in Baku.
Marc Schmitz is well known for his funnel-shaped installations in public places. In May this year he approached the Spacenet Inventors at Corocord with an unusual request. His idea was to create a transparent, funnel-shaped sculpture to be hung between buildings in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku. "We were happy to take on this challenge," said Torsten Frank, proxy at Corocord, "because it meant that we could once again give proof of our broad know-how about rope in the artistic field."
The first step was for the Corocord team, together with the artist, to turn his idea into a model. In constructing the structure we didn’t use the usual Corocord ropes, but ropes without steel reinforcement made from double braid mega-twin. These ropes develop well-defined, geometric kinks even with little pressure. After the static test carried out by the Werner Sobeck office, the artwork was finished in just one day at our Berlin Spacenet manufacture thanks to the huge dedication of our staff. And so "Baku Spaces no. 5" could quickly start its journey to Baku and was installed in time for the opening on 12th June at the Academy of Painting there.
